For nearly fifty years, the Foxfield Races have been a defining part of Charlottesville’s equestrian and cultural life. Held each spring and fall, the races bring together steeplechase sport and community tradition in a setting that is uniquely Foxfield. What began as a local gathering has grown into one of the country’s most respected steeplechase events, welcoming riders, families, students, and spectators from across Virginia and beyond.
At their core, the Foxfield Races are about more than competition. They are a celebration of open space, horsemanship, and the shared experience of coming together on land that has long supported agriculture, sport, and community life.
Today, our focus is on ensuring the Foxfield Races remain a vibrant and lasting tradition. That means protecting what makes the races special while investing in the infrastructure and land care needed to support them safely and sustainably. Thoughtful improvements — from course conditions to facilities and visitor access — are essential to maintaining the quality of the racing experience for riders, horses, and spectators alike. By strengthening the foundation that supports race days, Foxfield can continue hosting events that are safe, welcoming, and enjoyable for all.
The goal is simple: to keep the races at Foxfield, grounded in the land and community that have defined them, and to ensure they remain a shared experience for generations to come.
