Foxfield sits on land that has long been part of Charlottesville’s cultural heritage. In the late 1970s, the property was transformed from a former airfield and riding school into a steeplechase course by founder Mariann de Tejada and ever since has served as a pillar of the community designed to bring people together around open space and sport. For decades, the property has hosted riders, families, and students, serving as a hub for the Charlottesville community and a seasonal tradition woven into life in the region. 

In 2024, Foxfield Land Preservation Fund purchased Foxfield, and Zach and Sara Miller took over as stewards of the property. For the Millers, Foxfield is more than just a racecourse — it is part of the landscape that shaped their lives. The Miller family purchased the 600-acre Timbercreek Farm across from what would become Foxfield in the 1970s, and have lived on the property for generations. Over the years, multiple generations of Millers have grown up riding and racing at Foxfield, and the family has a deep understanding of and respect for the land.

Foxfield plays a unique role in Charlottesville as both open land and a public-facing equestrian venue. When uncertainty arose about the property’s long-term ability to support races and community use, the Millers took action to provide stability and continuity. 

Today, Foxfield Land Preservation’s focus is on ensuring Foxfield remains viable — not just as a racecourse, but as a piece of nature that can continue serving riders, spectators, and the broader community while honoring the traditions that define it.
