What is the Foxfield Fund?

The Foxfield Fund is the local impact grant program from the Miller family’s Cassiopeia Foundation – focused on investing in projects that support the well-being and quality of life of Virginians. Foxfield Land Preservation is one of several signature charitable initiatives of the Foxfield Fund, which range from environmental preservation, to mental health support, to fighting food insecurity.

Our Impact

Over the last two decades, the Fund has invested nearly $15 million in local organizations and businesses in Charlottesville, including $5 million during the COVID-19 pandemic to combat food insecurity, expand mental health services, and support small businesses. This includes critical support for organizations in the greater Charlottesville region, including Albemarle County Public Schools, Charlottesville Free Clinic, Piedmont Family YMCA, and Virginia Food System Council.

Blue Ridge Food Bank

The Foxfield Fund committed $150,000 to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank to help alleviate food insecurity around the holidays. The funding supported the organization in meeting increased demand amidst funding cuts to federal food assistance programs and providing more than half a million meals to individuals and families throughout Virginia.

“The holidays are a beautiful time — especially here in the Blue Ridge — but can be stressful for many families already struggling to buy groceries,” said Kari Diener, CEO of the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. “Alleviating even a little of that burden can make a world of difference. Support from the Foxfield Fund will help us make sure that more families can gather around a full table this winter.”

Ronald McDonald House Charities

The Foxfield Fund provided a $100,000 matching donation to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Charlottesville in support of the organization's first annual Red Shoe Gala, helping bring the total amount raised at the event to nearly $300,000. The funding will go directly toward providing free lodging and meals to families whose children are receiving medical care at the University of Virginia Medical Center, allowing them to focus on their child's recovery without the burden of housing or food costs.

The Foxfield Fund’s donation honors the legacy of the Dick family, especially Thomas “Tom” Dick and J. Benjamin “Ben” Dick, who played a defining role as stewards of the historic Foxfield steeplechase track before selling the property to the Foxfield Fund and passing the mantle of stewardship to Zach and Sara Miller. Tom Dick’s son Tommy Dick Jr., passed away after a battle with testicular cancer in 2007.

“We are profoundly grateful to the Foxfield Fund, Zach and Sara Miller, and the entire Dick family for this deeply meaningful and transformative gift,” said Bryan Harris, CEO of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Charlottesville. “This matching opportunity comes at a pivotal moment for our organization. It not only amplifies the generosity of our community but also ensures that more families can remain close to their children while they receive life-saving care. It is a beautiful tribute to a legacy rooted in compassion and community.”
